The stockbroker appointed by the government to sell government securities on the London Stock Exchange, under the instructions of the Bank of England He is also the broker to the National Debt Commissioners. Until October 1986 (see Big Bang) the government broker was traditionally the senior partner of Mullins & Co. Since then, when the Bank of England started its own gilt-edged dealing room, the government broker has been appointed from the gilt-edged division of the Bank of England, although some of his or her functions are now undertaken by the gilt-edged market makers
